Many financial institutions are turning to synthetic forms of credit intermediation to manage the risk they retain on balance sheet while optimizing regulatory capital ratios and improving economic returns. This process should accelerate as the new Basel Capital Accord proposed by the Bank for International Settlements is refined, and ultimately adopted.
